Berserk Boy is probably most remembered for the Mega Man series because of its array of elemental-themed powers that you unlock each time you defeat a foe. If you look past the thrilling steady stream of new weapons and the hunt for a crazy mad scientist, however, Inti Creates’ work may make a better analogy.
Whether you like it or not, the Blue Bomber’s maneuvers are quite calculated as you trot between platforms and aim at enemies. However, the powers of Berserk Boy cause your sprite to randomly bounce about the screen. Soon after beginning the fifteen-stage campaign, you will be able to employ a dash to quickly launch yourself onto elevated walkways and avoid danger. Your first dividend will soon be unlocked, a lightning orb that allows you to smash into opponents and lock on them remotely to deal more damage.
How Carbonated is an Energy Drink?
Yes, it feels a lot like Azure Striker Gunvolt, but if you enjoy fast-paced, two-dimensional action, this kind of homage is great. Similar to how Berserk Boy feels heightened whether he’s launching kunai faster than Shinobi’s Joe Musashi, grinding rails, or ping-ponging between enemy groups, Sonic the Hedgehog provided an intensely energetic rendition of Mario’s platforming.
It’s true that you may quickly swap between different orb styles by tapping the shoulder button. Furthermore, not only do your offensive talents alter, but so do your navigational skills. You’ll gradually build a meter as you establish a rhythm, enabling you to unleash a powerful strike that’s perfect for surviving boss encounters throughout the game. And this is where Berserk Boy shows off its love of the classics even more. The first encounter gives the impression that Eggman/Dr. Robotnik is wearing a spider costume, and the fight scenes that follow all give homage to the 16-bit era.
In summary
Writing that is astute enough to avoid becoming verbose yet capturing all the mouthwatering action. It’s true that the protagonist Kai’s transformation from an impetuous young man to the world’s savior seems a little cliche, especially given his customary firebird companion, Fiore. But there are benefits to Berserk Boy if you can get past the formulaic setup. The action is arranged in a melodic tempo by Tee Lopes’ soundtrack, which complements the visually stunning spritework of the game. All in all, it’s a nostalgic journey that is definitely worthwhile.

Though there is an occasional sense of familiarity, Berserk Boy’s frantic action is unique and incredibly rhythmic. The demo is worth trying for anyone who has a soft spot for the 16-bit period.
