Living abroad and moving away from home might lead to cultural shock. Moving, of course, may be particularly upsetting when sadness is involved. And Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions by Shueisha Games bases its tale around that particular circumstance. Here, after his grandfather passed away recently, ten-year-old Damien’s family leaves France to live with his grandmother.
The way Damien handles his grief is essential to the story. Here, the main character draws on his knowledge of Japan as he imagines himself battling alongside various Jump+ characters in a manga. Through a series of isometric, turn-based combat, Damien deals with various kinds of anxiety. Thus, in the real world, while Damien is attempting to soothe his anxious dog, his imaginary teammates and alter ego battle a terrifying, kaiju-sized dog.
Just one Quick SPRG
However, prior to confrontations such as this, you will confront hostile groups of tiny, sharp-tongued monsters and enemies that resemble poorly rendered versions of DOOM’s Cacodemons. Here, Captain Velvet Meteor distills the essence of the tactical role-playing genre. As a result, the battle feels vibrant as you maneuver the two characters to launch solo strikes, use assist combos, and even deliver Power Combos after defeating three opponents and gathering three golden orbs.
The Jump+ Dimensions’ turn-taking is refreshingly fast, which makes sense given its mobile roots. Setting up a turn rarely takes longer than a few seconds thanks to indicators that show the positions required to activate the cooperative attacks and the right analog stick that handles directional targeting. Enemies also move and attack fast during their turns, guaranteeing that the action never slows down.
The Texture of Soil Beneath Your Boots
Your assaults’ overwhelming power adds to the game’s sense of speed. Small enemy groupings are automatically eliminated by stepping on them, and it’s consistently rewarding to trample over four or more of them. The best part is that every kill gradually replenishes your health meter, saving you from having to go any submenus to find healing supplies.
Larger opponents should naturally require different strategies. Still, there’s always a tactic to take advantage of. The fun of the game includes figuring out these tactics because every Jump+ ally has a unique attack style, ranging from destroying a large area of the battlefield to creating a line of potent destruction. Do you feel constrained by the four spaces allotted for each turn? You can bank extra squares with Captain Velvet Meteor, which is quite useful when your heroes are almost encircled. Strangely, there is no context-based transparency and you cannot change the fight’s perspective, which means that units may become hidden. It’s definitely a bothersome quirk. Fortunately, though, the challenge is mild, so it won’t likely be the primary factor in your failure. Although the campaign is brief, more mission kinds would have been nice.
Additional Yor
Considering that Shueisha publishes well-known characters like Ichigo Kurosaki, Naruto Uzumaki, and Monkey D. Luffy, you might anticipate that The Jump+ Dimensions will have a lot of celebrity power. Unfortunately, the title takes a more subdued stance. Of course, the introduction of characters like Loid Forger from SPY x FAMILY, the lead character from “Torture” Princess, and the Slime from Slime Life adds a little fan service to the game while also providing some excellent dialogue. However, the absence of voice acting seems like a squandered chance.
Manga character-starring mobile game ports are usually cause for concern. The strange outlier is Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions, though. Neither gacha pulls nor DLC are available right now. Rather, a single purchase offers players roughly ten hours of easily accessed, quick-paced strategy, accentuated with manga characters that are relatively well-liked. Captain Velvet Meteor might still make you happy even if you can only identify one or two allies.

VERY GOOD
Summary :Â One of the easiest grid-based strategy games available is Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions, thanks to design choices that make conflicts light and forgiving. This is a good substitute if you don’t have the time to play Disgaea or find Fire Emblem’s pace too slow.
