Demon Slayer: Take Out the Board! is a passable board game that fans of Demon Slayer may like if they’re looking for some light entertainment. For fans of Mario Party, this is a fine enough substitute even though the matches do drag a bit. There are also a lot of unlockables and several pretty fun minigames to play.
It’s not always the case that board games come to mind when I think of the Demon Slayer anime. Having saying that, I usually enjoy strange series and genre combinations, so sweep the board! fascinated me. It’s pretty much what I anticipated it to be—a lighthearted board game that you and your buddies could play for a few enjoyable hangout sessions.
Many of the most recognizable Demon Slayer heroes, including the main trio and the other Hashiras, are yours to play as. The objective of the game is for four players (or computer players) to work together to score points. There are two main ways to do this: either by moving about the board in search of mission orders or by fighting demons at various points on the board. In addition to being used for purchasing goods and moving up the rankings, gold is mostly obtained via landing on specific areas and playing minigames.
The vibrant environments and vicious creatures on each board represent the numerous storylines, each of which is based on a distinct chapter of Demon Slayer. Sweep the Board is aided by these varied boards as well as the special day and night system that is a key component of the main game! to distinguish itself somewhat from other Mario Party-style games. My personal favorites were the ones set in the Infinity Train and Entertainment District, but all of them functioned admirably because of the distinct arc-specific elements scattered across each level.
“You can play your favorite minigames until your heart’s content because they can be played outside of full matches and are all pretty entertaining.”
The best part of Sweep the Board is the minigames!, from straightforward cooperative memory and sketching games to fast-paced, furious snowball fights and kendo bouts. Every one of them is really entertaining, and since you may play them outside of complete matches, you can play your favorites as much as you like. You may use the gold you earn from playing to unlock new character outfits, reaction stamps, and player card images and designs. This gives you even more motivation to keep playing after you’ve tried each board once.
The main problem is that the five-turn choice feels just a little bit too short, and the usual 10-turn option feels a little bit too long. Repetition is likely to occur when you encounter the same demon encounters multiple times when you have 10. If you have a bad start with five, you could not see them all or have the opportunity to advance. Though it’s still worth trying, it would have been better to make demon encounters more varied in terms of gameplay or to allow for greater variance in turn counts.
