Glass is a brittle yet essential building block for any construction project in Minecraft, and they’re simple to obtain.
A house with all blocks and no windows in Minecraft can be a little dreary, so why not add some light with a few windows? While you can permanently eliminate some blocks in different parts of your base and call it a day, the better route is adding Glass for a more realistic touch. Of course, Glass isn’t freely available in Minecraft and requires a specific crafting process, which you can see below.
Making Glass in Minecraft
Fortunately for anyone about to build their first base, Glass is one of the simpler blocks to get in Minecraft. It only requires a furnace, coal or heat source, and Sand blocks. The exact recipe for Glass is shown below.
The recipe for Glass
To make a single Glass block, you need to smelt a Sand block using a furnace, and that’s it. As you might have guessed, Sand blocks are most commonly found by and underneath water and in the desert biome. It’s almost as common as dirt if you’re looking in the right area, so you should have zero issues procuring a solid amount of Sand. Then, you need enough coal or other heat sources to sustain the furnace and make all the glass you want.
When you place Glass in Minecraft, be extremely careful where you choose to put it. Once you place a Glass block, you can’t take it back. If you go to remove the block, it won’t drop to the floor, and you will be allowed to pick it back up. Instead, the block disappears, and you’re now down one piece of Glass. This also goes for glass panes, a form of glass blocks, but instead of being square, they are straight pieces. A Glass Pane is useful when you don’t need an entire block but still want the look of a glass window. Glass Panels can be crafted using six Glass blocks at a crafting table.
Suppose you want to color the Glass blocks you’re using. This requires some dye. For example, if you wish to have a green-colored Glass block, you would need to use Green Dye. The recipe for a colored Glass block is shown below.
Making a colored Glass block
Colored Glass blocks can be crafted at a crafting table, not a furnace. You can make eight colored Glass blocks by using eight Glass blocks and one dye at a crafting table. Of course, for most players, regular glass blocks will do the job for most of their Minecraft needs.
How To Make Paper In Minecraft
Paper is the basis of several practical recipes in Minecraft, and crafting it is straightforward once you know what materials are needed.
Paper is one of the most valuable materials you can acquire in Minecraft, as it’s an essential resource in several high-profile recipes. You need plenty of paper if you want to enchant a weapon or item, create a map, or use a firework. However, acquiring paper can be confusing, so check out the guide below to see how it’s made in Minecraft.
Getting Paper in Minecraft
Fortunately, getting paper is extremely simple once you know what materials you need and where they are located. Paper is made from Sugar Cane, a naturally occurring Minecraft resource only found by water. More specifically, sugar cane can only grow on a block that touches a water source directly. It’s a bright-green, stalky plant that’s difficult to miss once you know what it looks like (as seen below).
Sugar Cane is a highly useful resource.
As you can see in the screenshot above, I found a solid crop of Sugar Cane directly by a river. However, even a small pond can house Sugar Cane if you look diligently enough. Whenever you find a sugar cane crop, I recommend returning it to your base. Then, you want to get buckets of water and make a small pool with it, using blocks of sand or dirt to surround the pool. From there, place the Sugar Cane on the blocks, allowing it to grow and giving yourself an infinite source.
Remember, patience is vital in farming. To maximize your sugar cane yield, ensure as many blocks as possible are in contact with the water source. When harvesting, always leave a bit of Sugar Cane in the ground to allow for regrowth.
One way or the other, once you have at least three Sugar Cane in your inventory, head to a crafting table. Place three Sugar Cane horizontally across the table, and you can produce three pieces of paper there. The exact recipe is shown below.

As long as you have a reliable source of Sugar Cane, which is done quickly enough with the farm method, you also have an infinite supply of paper in Minecraft.
